When I started exploring the connection between astrology and yoga I understood that both demanded self-observation and that both required to acknowledge the basic premise that we are not detached of the rest of the universe.
While astrology connects our inner and outer worlds symbolised by planets and cycles we witness continuously in nature, yoga uses self-awareness to open up to the existing connection we hold with everything surrounding us. It is surprising that some astrologers and yogis can detach themselves from the multi dimensional experience offered by both disciplines, but the message of tolerance and mutual respect is a universal premise to consider if we are ever going to find collective evolution.
Rather than isolating these two vast sources of knowledge and wisdom, it occurred to me that they could actually work together. Our styles of communication and understanding can be very different and it would be normal to feel that astrology or yoga are too abstract or too concrete for our own preference. However, it is undeniable that both languages strengthen our awareness of our perpetual exchange of energy with everything around us. Furthermore by uniting yoga and astrology, all aspects of our personal experience are covered under one premise that applies to micro and macro cosmos:
"That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above corresponds to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracle of the One Thing" .
This Hermetic Principle embodies the most important truth we must understand as yogis or astrologers, or both. We inhabit a place between the earth and the sky, we are composed of matter and energy, we are body and soul. As such, we are active creators of our own reality because our personal world is not detached from the rest of the universe. In fact, we have the capability of changing the “big picture”.
However we often think that our actions are of no consequence in the great scheme of things. Astrology is often misinterpreted as if the sky could dictate our faith, while yoga is misunderstood as physical activity to improve our overall health and fitness. In both cases, we assume that we are puppets being governed by external forces beyond our control. However neither astrology or yoga consider that the laws of cause and effect could possibly operate in such a simplistic manner. Both have accumulated knowledge and wisdom over centuries of study and both are intrinsically philosophical in nature as the acknowledgement of universal energy is at the core of their teachings.
The idea of simplistic cause-effect immediate predictions or basic fitness condition are an insult to ancient lineages of wisdom that preserved, contributed and developed the knowledge we can access so easily these days.
